We're Here to Help
Adolescence is a time of massive emotional, physical and social changes. At Discovery Family Therapy, our teen therapists specialise in supporting young people as they navigate challenges like:
-
Social anxiety and panic attacks
-
School refusal, academic pressure and exam stress
-
Depression, low motivation, or emotional shutdown
-
Gender identity, self-confidence and peer pressure
-
Family conflict, behavioural changes, or emotional outbursts
-
Family Domestic Violence Recovery
-
Abuse and neglect
-
Self-harm
-
Eating Disorders
-
Friendships and bullying
We create a safe, non-judgmental space where teens can express themselves and build emotional resilience while working in partnership with parents where needed.
Gender Identity Counselling
Gender identity counselling for trans, non-binary or questioning teens provides a safe, judgement free space for them to explore and express themselves, helping them live as their most authentic self. When we don't know who we are, we constantly battle our own wants and needs and how others think we should look or behave. This can lead to feeling isolated, depressed and anxious. Working with a counsellor who specialises in gender support, we can:
-
Discuss their thoughts, feelings, worries, and fears.
-
Develop coping strategies for stressful situations like discrimination.
-
Learn communication skills for navigating difficult conversations with family, friends, teachers and peers.
-
Offer support with ‘coming out’, transitioning, and with medical interventions, should they choose that route.
-
A safe space to explore private things like relationship problems, body worries, and non-gender-related issues.

Is Teen Counselling Confidential?
Yes, counselling is confidential for teenagers, even during parent sessions. There are legal exceptions where we are required to break confidentiality only if there is a serious risk of harm to the teen or others. We also encourage open communication between teens and their parents where appropriate.
Discovery Family Therapy is a Child-Safe environment. Read our full children's confidentiality policy here.
Can I attend the session with my teen?
We invite parents in for an inital Parent-Only session to discuss their concerns and work with the counsellor to find strategies they can use at home to support thier teen. If your teen wishes parents to attend therapy with them, we would support thier decision.
Can I stay up to date with how therapy is going?
Parent-only sessions are planned after every 8 - 10 sessions. Your teens information remains confidential at all times. These parent sessions track how your teen is going at home and assists in creating strategies you can use at home to support your teen.
Do I need a referral to see a teen counsellor in Perth?
No referral is needed. You can contact us directly to book an appointment. Our teen counsellors are experienced in supporting adolescents without needing a mental health care plan.
How many sessions will my teen need?
It depends on the nature of the issue. Some teens benefit from just a few sessions to work through a specific challenge, while others may need longer-term support. We regularly review progress and discuss next steps with both the teen and parent (where appropriate).
